This young woman is proudly displaying some of her garden's produce. In the background we can see fields with haystacks. The scene is idyllic and resonates with nostalgia for a way of life which has almost slipped away from us.
The painting dates from about 1890, and is signed V. Carlsean (at least that is the name we have deciphered.) Have not found an artist by that name, but the scene and the woman's clothing identify the work as French.
The painting is oil on canvas measuring 24" x 12". It is relined , retouched and attached to its original wooden stretcher, and is in a new frame measuring 28" x 16".
