John Ritchie (English, fl. 1857-75) was a painter of imaginary genre scenes of contemporary Victorian life and was most active between the years of 1857 and 1875. As a follower of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, his works feature bright colouring, clarity of lighting, and an attention to detail present in the Pre-Raphaelite style. His two best-known works, A Summer Day in Hyde Park and A Winter Day in St. James’ Park were both exhibited at the Liverpool Academy in 1858. Works by Ritchie can be seen at the Brighton Museum & Art Gallery, Brighton; the Brooke Robinson Museum, Dudley; the Cooper Gallery, Barnsley; the Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle upon Tyne; and the Museum of London, London.
