Description

1753 Seutter Map of Africa -- Africa Iuxta Navigationes et Observationes Recentissimas Aucta Correcta et in Sua Regna et Status Divisa, in Lucem Edita. 1753 Nurnberg. 19.2 x 22.4 in. This striking map of Africa is based on Homann's earlier map, and was issued in Homann’s Atlas Compendiarius Seu Scholasticus Minor. Seutter was apprenticed to Homann prior to establishing his own publishing business. The map, while providing a large amount of topographical and settlement detail, is the more inaccurate the further south and inland one looks in Africa. The Nile is shown originating in the south at lakes Zaire and Zaflan. The decorative cartouche features natives, pyramids, lion, snakes, crocodile and a dragon.
