A sculpted marble figure of a winged female Victory, a Nike, in the ancient Greek manner, portrayed standing and with outstretched wings, her drapery beneath her waist spreading outwards,162cm high, 85cm wide The Samothrace Nike currently held at the Louvre in Paris is often cited as epitomising Helenistic sculpture, with its very obvious movement represented by the gloriously billowing drapery as well as her stance. Interestingly though, the portrayal of natural movement that was so inherent in Helenistic sculpture, being a direct departure from the purer but more static forms of the Archaic and early Classical sculpture is less pronounced in the example offered here. Indeed, elements of the work here are more reminscent of the sculpture of those earlier, more formal periods
