Chalet Glass was once the quintessential wedding gift, a symbol of Canadian excellence at the 1967 World Fair, a cherished heirloom. Today Chalet Glass is an eagerly sought collector’s item, a showcase piece in art glass galleries, the subject of an art gallery retrospective. The factory was established in Montreal in 1958 and named Les Industries de Verre et Miroirs. In 1960, the name was changed to Murano Glass. Murano Glass was Canada’s first handmade decorative glassware company. The company name was again changed in late 1962 to Chalet Artistic Glass - making it clear that Chalet was a Canadian company producing handmade Canadian designs for Canadian tastes by skilled artists. The factory thrived but by the 1970s was experiencing financial troubles and closed its door in 1974.
