A large 15 1/2" Royal Doulton Jackdaw Of Rheims” Charger. Jackdaw Of Rheims is one of Royal Doultons’ Literary series; it celebrates one of the “Ingoldsby Legends” which were penned by Richard Harris Barham in 1840. The story concerns Jackdaw and his theft of a Cardinal’s ring which Jackdaw returns when he suffers from a curse. He then becomes so pious that he is canonized on his death. The series was initially in production from 1906 until 1930. In 1949 some of the scenes were re-released on chop dishes. On page 38 of Volume One of “Royal Doulton Series Ware; Louise Irvine lists the 16 known scenes that make up this series. This is scene 2: “Bishop and abbot and prior were there”. It has the standard black stamped under glaze maker’s mark of the style that was introduced in the 1930’s, beneath this also stamped in black ink is the pattern number D5689. It has the impressed date code 10-41; October 1941 and is in VG condition, with some light general crazing. 1This is the largest charger that Royal Doulton produced. 5 1/2"x15 1/2"x 1 3/4".
