Fairy Tales And Legends By Hans Andersen. This is a recovered copy, noted on the copyright page as having been bound by Leighton-Straker, but with the re-binder's stamp (illegible) at the bottom of the first blank end spread, of the Cobden-Sanderson 1935 publication, the first thus, of Hans (Christian) Andersen Fairy Tales and Legends, liberally illustrated by Rex Whistler, who signed the half-title page, with a flourish (see photo). The only other writing is a pencil gift notation, in the preceding and otherwise blank spread, to a "Darling Hugh", dated 1937. The (app. 8.125" x 5") cover, ¾ dark blue-green crushed morocco with patterned boards, five raised bands on the spine, gold author/title lettering in a red background, date of publication in gold at the bottom of the spine, is in very good condition, with minor scuffs to the leather, but no notable stains, and with slight darkening to the boards, which are also unstained. The spine is straight and securely attached. The lettering is clean and unfaded. The only notable cover damage is to the wrap-around top inside back cover border, into which four initials have been scratched, beginning with H, no doubt the darling Hugh. The inside cover spreads, the same pattern as the exterior boards, are sunned to their borders, but otherwise clean. There are no stamps or other attachments, there or elsewhere. There is no writing to any pages. The binding is tight, with no loose or missing pages. There are no page tears or creases. There is light foxing to the page edges, and a slight dulling to the gilt top edges, but no significant stains to either, and no notable stains to any page faces, on which the text and many illustrations are unfaded and clean. The Rex Whistler signature is in fine condition.
