Rokeby, A Poem (fore-edge Painting). This is the stated Fifth Edition, printed for A. Constable and Co. and John Ballantyne and Co., Edinburgh; and Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, London, in 1813, of Walter Scott's Rokeby; A Poem, 413 numbered pages. The full leather cover (8.625" x 5.5") has surface scuffs, including lost material at the edges of the spine, and a few spot stains, but no prominent stains. The spine is straight and securely attached, but with faded gilt lettering and decoration. The front and back has an unfaded red background and a gilt greek key border with little fade. The outside corners are slightly bumped. This appears to be a recovered copy, though there is no attribution as to bindery. The three end leaves, front and back, have a few pencil notes, including the title of the fore-edge painting, but no ink or other indelible marks. There are no stamps or other attachments. The khaki inside cover spreads are unfaded and clean. There is recurrent foxing and other stains throughout the book. No text is obscured, but most pages have at least some stains. The binding is tight, throughout the book, with no loose or missing pages. There are shallow corner creases to some pages, but most have none.
