Description
A fine Victorian full size twin cylinder compound vertical live steam marine engine, circa 1890. The reversing gear to the Stephenson's design with fine mahogany plank lagging to cylinder block, measuring 101cm by 41cm. Approximate cylinder diameters. High pressure 5 1/4 inches and Low pressure 11 inches with bolted cover plates. The balanced open crank fitted with bronze bushes, drip oilers to connecting rods and bronze oiler cups to bearings with covers. Bevel gear drive to pumps. The engine was originally used in an Admirals Naval Pinnace and removed prior to demolition of the vessel by Pounds Marine in Portsmouth in 1968. It is sold together with a photograph of the original vessel brass flag mounted on board 28cm by 29cm. Engine length 145cm. Height 128cm. Width 85cm. Height measurement does not include the supporting stand which is mounted on four wheels. Please note : this engine was built by J. Samuel White of Cowes, Isle of Wight
