Description
An illustration from the Bhagvata Purana, 18th century, gouache on paper heightened with gilt, divided into an upper and lower register with worshippers and rulers, several scenes with Lord Krishna, within red border, text to reverse, 34 x 19cm. The text reads ''Lord Krishna accompanied with his brother Haldhar (Balarama) has come to Mathura. Walking through the streets of Mathura they encounter Kubja - a lovely young lady who is a hunchback. Kubja greets Krishna with sandlewood paste. Pleased with her gesture, Lord Krishna puts his hand under her chin and removes the bend in her back, blessing her with a normal body again. Receiving presents and gifts from the people Krishna asks them about the place where King Kamsa has kept his big bow. Krishna kills the guards protecting it and breaks the bow into two, symbolising that Kamsa will be dead the next day.''
