The set is in good overall condition, with light scuffs and some border and spine darkening to the covers (app. 5.25" x 7.5"), which have dark blue cloth backgrounds, gold lettering and design to the spine and front. The lettering is partly faded to some spines, but clearly legible. A few spines are moderately cocked. Most are straight. All the inside cover spreads are foxed. The page edges are foxed, though not heavily. There are few stains, none of which are prominent, to the page faces. The only notable tears are to three leaves toward the back of volume V. These are significant, with creases and stains to the tops of those pages, though there are no missing pieces (see photos). There are no stamps or notations. The bindings are secure, with no loose or missing pages. The frontispiece illustrations are unfaded and with few stains, though the accompanying tissue guards are often foxed. All the text is clearly legible.
