The covers (4.25" x 6.625"), noted as "Bound by Macmillan & Son, Cambridge" on the front end pages, are in good overall condition, but with cracking at the sides of the brown leather spines, each of which has 5 raised bands, gilt decoration and lettering. The ends have minor wear, except the top of Volume II, which is frayed, and with some missing material (see photo). Each spine is securely attached, as are all front and back covers, though the front hinge of Volume I has some looseness. The front and back boards, green backgrounds with double-lined gilt borders, have a number of light scuffs but no prominent stains. Some outside corners have shallow bumps. Each volume has two bookplates to the front inside cover. One (Virtutis fortuna comes) is that of Harry Pomeroy Davison. I haven't been able to decipher the owner's name on the second bookplate (Adversa virtute repello). There are no other stamps or attachments. I've found no writing. The bindings are tight, with no loose pages. There is recurrent foxing, mostly to the end pages. Most pages have no stains. The gilt edges are generally clean, but with spotting to the top edges.
