Description
1. Bronze medal struck on behalf the Jewish community in Hamburg in honor of Gabriel Riesser (1806-1863), German-Jewish lawyer and politician, who actively championed the emancipation of the Jews of Germany. [Hamburg], 1836.
Obverse: three women. The central figure is holding two babies; on her right is a woman wearing a cross and leaning on an altar, and on her left is a woman chained to the Tablets of the Law, (representing Christianity and Judaism). They are surrounded by the German legend "Haben Wir Nicht Alle Einen Vater-Hat Uns Nicht Ein Gott Erschaffen" [Have we not all one Father? Has not one God created us? (Malachi 2:10)] Reverse: German dedication - "To the warrior for freedom and justice, Dr. Gabriel Riesser, from his community in Hamburg, 1836."
Diameter: 60 mm.
2 Bronze medal in honor of Ludwig Schloss, teacher in the Jewish school in Speyer, Germany, to commemorate 50 years as a teacher. [Germany], 1887.
Obverse: German dedication, signed "Dr. Eugen Merzbacher". Reverse: relief of a child reading a book with the Tablets of the Law and a Menorah at his side. Above is the Hebrew legend "With the help of God".
