Item Details
Description
Seventeen incunabula leaves from Liber Chronicarum (the Nuremberg Chronicle) by Hartmann Schedel. [Nuremberg, 1493]. Latin.
The Liber Chronicarum chronicles history from the creation of the world until the times of the author, based on the Bible, the New Testament, and on various other books. The book was first printed in Neremberg in 1493, by Anton Koberger, and is considered one of the best-documented incunabula. It was one of the first books to successfully integrate woodcut illustrations and text, and is known to this day for its hundreds of woodcut illustrations. The woodcuts were created in the workshop of Michael Wolgemut, one of the foremost artists in Nuremberg at the time (Albrecht Durer was his apprentice and student, and it is possible that he assisted in the preparation of some of the illustrations).
The leaves in this collection feature woodcuts (most of them hand colored), illustrating Bible scenes or scenes relating to the Jews:
* The creation of Eve (Folio VI). * Noah's Ark (folio XI). * Family tree beginning with Noah and his sons (double leaf, folio XIIII-XV). * View of Jerusalem with Solomon's Temple; construction of the Tower of Babel (folio XVII). * Destruction of Sodom and the meeting of Abraham and Malchizedek (folio XXI). * Binding of Isaac (folio XXII) * Moses' revelation of the burning bush; Job and the Satan (folio XIXX). * The Golden Calf (folio XXXI). * The seven-branched Menorah (folio XXXII). * Priest in priestly raiment, sacrificial altar Tablets of the Law, and other illustrations (folio XXXIII). * The Judgement of Solomon (folio XLVII). * Elijah's ascent to Heaven; the city of Jericho (folio L). * Kings and prophets of Israel (folio LIII). * The Third Temple – palns of the interior and illustration of the Temple (folios LXVI and LXVII). * Jews being burned at the stake, apparently during the Rindfleisch massacres (folio CCXX). * Jews torturing the child Simon of Trent (folio CCLIII).
Enclosed:
* Woodcut (from folio II) depicting the first day of creation.
* Double leaf (folio LXIII-LXIIII) from the German edition of the Nuremberg Chronicle depicting the destruction of Jerusalem and the Holy Temple by Nevuzaradan, commander-in-chief of Nebuchadnezzar, in 586 BCE.
19 items in total. I6 leaves, 41X29 cm, 2 double leaves, approximately 41X58 cm, one woodcut, 22.5X22.5 cm. All leaves contain hand-colored woodcuts (Three leaves have uncolored woodcuts as well).
