Description

From a prominent collection, a New York & New England Railroad frame made by The Railroad Signal Lamp & Lantern Company. This is a 6" barrel style frame and the frame has a fat 3 1/2" diameter opening for the base of the globe. This is a transition frame between the brasstop era and wire bottoms. Note how tall it is. The verticals and the upper horizontals are all flat wires. The base ring is round. Some RR Sigs even have flat base rings. The fount is substantial because it's the larger diameter model with one ring on the bottom. With a glass fount and burner, there founts tend to break off at their butt joint to the base cup.

There are 2 sizes of New England barrel globes. This one is the shorter model with a larger top diameter of 2 3/4". The taller barrels use a top diameter of 2 1/2". This globe has a great NY&NERR casting in a rectangular panel. The glass is thick. The glass is showing some purple discoloration from age. It's a great globe.

The New York & New England Railroad was created to compete with the New Haven. It ran through the middle of nowhere and was not a financial success. In 1895 the New York and New England became the New England Railroad. 3 years later in 1898 it was absorbed into the New Haven system.
