Description
A magnificent Roman transport amphora, Republic, 3rd – 2nd Century BC, from the Tyrrhenian coast of Italy, the cylindrical body tapering to a long foot, with twin handles and extensive marine encrustation. H: 39 in (98.8 cm); W: 14 in (35.4 cm). Extremely well preserved with heavy custom metal stand. Ex collection of Capt. Richard D. Van Antwerp. Capt. Van Antwerp served/commanded in the 6th fleet Mediterranean from 1962-1967 and from 1967-1974 commanded in the seventh fleet Pacific during the Vietnam War. His collection of amphorae were collected in and from the Mediterranean area in mid-1960's and had been cataloged by Richard Holgate Appraisals.
