Description
This is a rare document of theatrical history, a 1934 brochure from the famous but short-lived Casino de Paree theatre-restaurant, managed by producer Billy Rose. This 16 page program includes: black and white pictures of stage shows, nude dancers, portraits of women performers, a picture of the terrace, articles on Billy Rose, Yermie Stern, John Steinberg, and Clark Robinson, a theatrical review by a newspaper, and a description of the entertainment and advertisements. The Casino de Paree: It introduced Parisian nightlife to the New York City middle class right after Prohibition. It profited from low prices and high volume, entertaining up to 2,400 guests per night, by offering no cover charge, high quality food at low prices in an extravagant atmosphere, featuring the most talented entertainers, and available all for only a $2.50 minimum charge. Guests enjoyed a 90 minute tabloid revue of 50 beautiful women who dance alluringly in feathers, frills and fancies. Two large orchestras played hot jazz music continuously, directed by Leon Belasco. Handsome male gigolos danced with single women guests. Other attractions: Small-Time Cavalcade and nude Girl-in-the-Goldfish-Bowl. Stars included: Jimmy Durante, Eleanor Powell, Bob Hope, Milton Berle, Cardini (magician), Benny Goodman, and Bill ‘Bojangles’ Robinson. It inspired the movie “Go into Your Dance” with Al Jolson and Ruby Keeler. The Paree made more money than any other nightclub in New York during the peak of the Great Depression - grossing $38,000 per week, $1 million in the first six months. Despite its success it was in business for only 16 months! The Luciano syndicate said “While you [Rose] were in Europe, we shot out most of the clauses” in the contract, firing top acts and eliminating fine cuisine in a foolish attempt to increase profits. Rose promptly quit and through his government connections obtained protection from the mob directly from J. Edgar Hoover.
