Item Details
Description
This lot consists of the antique Dutch naval history work, "La vie de Corneille Tromp, Lieutenant-Amiral-General de Hollande & de West-Frise ou l'on verra tout ce qui s'est passe de plus memorable sur Mer, dans les Guerres que la Hollande a eu a soutenir contre la France, l'Angleterre, & les autres Puissances de l'Europe by Adrien Richer (The Hague: Chez Etienne Foulque, 1694).

This antique volume is a biography of Cornelis Maartenszoon Tromp (3 September 1629 - 29 May 1691), who was a Dutch naval officer. He was the son of Lieutenant Admiral Maarten Tromp. He became Lieutenant Admiral General in the Dutch Navy and briefly Admiral General in the Danish Navy. He fought in the first three Anglo-Dutch Wars and in the Scanian War (Wikipedia). This is a first French-language edition of this biography, preceded by the Dutch edition in 1692.

The volume is bound in quarter leather with brown pebbled cloth, and faded gilt lettering to the spine. The work offers a title page printed in red and black, with a woodcut vignette at the bottom of the page. Additional woodcut initials, headpieces, and tailpieces ornament the text.

This solidly-bound antique volume displays minor external wear, with rubbing to the spine and spine edges, and a small white spot of soiling to the front cover. The outer edge of the textblock is toned. A period owner's signature is present on the title page, reading "David Aubin son livre, 1699." Mild scattered foxing, occasional smudging, and occasional spots of moisture appear in the interior.
