Description

Green Jade Decorative Box with Wooden Stand
Chinese Qing Dynasty (1644-1912)
The vessel is carved with a rectangular body and four columnar corners. Each column of the vessel’s leg supports is carved with five claws at the base, followed by a mythical taotie mask at the foot, while the remainder of each column is carved in low relief, in an archaistic design.
The base of the body is decorated with a band of scrolled openwork, as a skirted base, between each of the leg supports. The main part of the body is divided into two sectional, horizontal rows and carved in low relief, in an archaistic pattern, depicting heads of dragons at the upper section.At either end are two dragon-head handles with loose rings to the sides. Each dragon’s head is connected by further scrolling work extending from each of the four legs.
The cover is of a flattened, polished surface and surrounded by four dragon heads on each corner, at the top of each of the columnar legs. The circumference of the lid is decorated by openwork carving in a scrolled pattern.
The stone is of an even light greenish tone, while a slight russet hue is found at the claws and the underside of the vessel.
