Description
Rare and Fine Three-Gallon Stoneware jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration and Molded Handles, attributed to the Thompson Pottery, Morgantown, WV, circa 1860, narrow-bodied, cylindrical jar with heavily-tooled shoulder, tapered rim, and highly-unusual molded handles with stepped form and rounded terminals. Decorated on the front with three vines bearing flowers, the two lower motifs featuring rare daisy-shaped blossoms at their centers. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Impressed with a three-gallon capacity mark on reverse. This jar is the first example of Morgantown stoneware we have seen bearing this particular cobalt floral design. It is also the first we have seen made with this specific handle mold. Small chips to one handle. Shallow chipping to opposite handle. A small rim chip on reverse. A small base chip on reverse.
