Description
An Egyptian blue-glazed composition figure of a reclining lion, Graeco-Roman, 2nd Century BC - 2nd Century AD, finely detailed lion with a recumbent head, turned sharply to the right and facing forward, with his left forepaw resting on his left. The powerfully carved head possesses a stylized mane and ruff. An exceptional lion and very rare, particularly due to the beautiful condition. 1 3/4 in x 1 1/8 in (4.5 x 2.8 cm). It is in an excellent state of preservation, retaining virtually all of its rich blue/green glazing. This lion is among a group that were probably inspired by the monumental lion carved during the reign of Nectanebo (380 - 362 B.C.). Ex Ronald Gower Collection, Atlanta, Georgia.
