Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. early 20th century CE. A round silver lidded box with sky blue, navy blue, dark red, yellow, and green floral cloisonne enamel motifs around the exterior of the body and the lid. The lid has a small lip that fits into the body and seals it. There are also remaining traces of niello, a mixture of copper, silver, and lead sulphates with a black color, often inlaid or engraved onto etched metal, around the edges. Size with lid on: 2.55" W x 1.25" H (6.5 cm x 3.2 cm)

From the mid-19th century to the early 20th, Russian art of all kinds experienced a renaissance that is known as the Silver Age. Russian artisans were inspired by the Gothic, the Moresque, Chinoiserie, the Baroque, the Rococo… all ornate styles, replete with scrolling vines and flourishing arches. They combined this with the bright colors and rich ornament of Old Russian applied art to create a unique style of which silver items like this lidded box are some of the most enduring.
