Description
Plan Von Neu Ebenezer...[with] Part of Carolina. Matteus Seutter (1678-1756). Engraved map with original hand color in full. Augsburg, 1747. 22 1/4 x 25 3/4 inches sheet, 33 1/4 x 36 1/2 inches framed. This map illustrates one of the most interesting early colonies in the Southeast. The Salzburgers were a group of Lutherans who were exiled from their homeland in Salzburg, Austria. In 1734, the English Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge sponsored the sea passage of a small group of them to America. Their first settlement, on the Ebenezer River, proved inhopitable, so in 1736 they moved to the banks of the Savannah River, where they founded New Ebenezer, pictured here.
