The Greatest Evangelist of the 19th Century D.L. Moody!
DWIGHT LYMAN “D.L.” MOODY (1837-1899). Famous American Evangelist, just-elected President Abraham Lincoln visited him and spoke at a Sunday School meeting on November 25, 1860.
August 17, 1889-Dated, Rare Autograph Letter Signed, "D.L. Moody," 2 pages, 5" x 7.75", Octavo, from Northfield, Massachusetts, Choice Very Fine. Boldly written upon heavy wove paper to a Mr. Pratt, Moody pens, in full:

"My Dear Mr. Pratt -- I will not say that I will go or not at the present I am to go to Chicago to start my school & if I can run out to you I will do so but you must not rely on me if I find when I can get to Chicago that I can go I will do so. -- Yours truly -- (Signed) D.L. Moody."

Born in Northfield, Mass., Moody became a Boston shoe salesman before traveling to Chicago in 1856 to engage in mission ary work. Moody's work in Chicago, Illinois, led to the largest Sunday School of his time. He labored so abundantly that within a year the average attendance at his school was 650, while sixty volunteers from various churches served as teachers. It became so well known that just-elected President Abraham Lincoln visited him and spoke at a Sunday School meeting on November 25, 1860. Moody's indefatigable work at the school for the next 30 years made it one of the largest and most influential Christian organizations in the Midwest.
