Russian Film Director Sergei Eisenstein Autograph Letter
SERGEI EISENSTEIN, (1898-1948). Pioneering Soviet Russian Film Director.
May 6, 1943-Dated World War Two Era, Rare Autograph Letter Signed, “S. Eisenstein”, 1 page, measuring 5.625” x 7.875”, Very Fine. Written, in vibrant heavy red pencil, on “Central United Film Studio for the Film Production ‘Ivan the Terrible’ letterhead stationery, in Cyrillic, from Alta Ata, written to Alexander Mihailovich. Eisenstein pens in full (translated from Russian):
“Dear Alexander Mihailovich: I am asking you very much to help comrade Naumova (costume designer for the film) who is working as costume designer on my film for her short stay in Moscow. On food and living. Grateful in advance. With comrade greetings, S. Eisenstein.”
A very nice Letter penned during the filming of Part 1 of Eisenstein’s Ivan the Terrible - a two-part historical epic about Ivan IV of Russia, written and directed by Eisenstein. Part 1 was released in 1944 but Part 2 was not released until 1958 due to political censorship. Originally planned as a trilogy, Eisenstein died before the third installment could be finished. The innovative director, considered to be the “Father of the Montage,” profoundly influenced early filmmakers. Minor wear separation at the folds, else in nice condition for display. Extremely Rare.
