Description
Details: [VLIET, Jan Georg van (b. 1610). 'The Basket Maker'. Holland: no date but circa 1630]. Etching and drypoint, unsigned. Excellent condition, except for two small wormholes in image area. Sheet size: 8 5/8 x 6 3/4 inches (plate mark: 8 1/4 x 6 3/8 inches).
A fine image depicting the everyday life of tradesmen in Holland, from one of the 'Chief etchers of the Northern School' (William Hughes Willshire).
A disregard for the laws of perspective gives this image a charming slightly naive quality, whilst the artist's attention to detail lends interest to the composition. An apprentice concentrates on stripping the bark from a willow or hazel wand by drawing it through the cleft in a carefully split stave, to his right is a vast stack of wands that he has yet to work on. In the foreground the master basket-maker works, seated on a low raised dais, the half open door allowing in the light which illuminates the basket he is working on.
Jan Georg van Vliet (active 1828-37) was born in either Leiden or Delft, and worked with Rembrandt on a couple of occasions. This print comes from a series on Dutch tradesmen.
