Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A kneeling female figure wearing a skirt, necklace, large, round earrings, and a headband made of two crossed, applied strips - a wonderful example from this shaft tomb culture. Interestingly, the headband switches color and pattern in the center of the forehead - perhaps the original audience for this piece would have recognized that as a defining trait, linking the woman to a kin group or particular location. Size: 2.9" L x 4.5" W x 7" H (7.4 cm x 11.4 cm x 17.8 cm)
An attractive figure, her body is painted a lustrous creamy taupe with her skirt, necklace, and half of her headband a contrasting dark red. Her face has narrowed eyes and an elongated nose; her skull extends upward in a biologically impossible shape that may reflect beauty standards in this society or a particular abstract ideal.
Provenance: Ex-Harvey Collection, acquired prior to 1972
