Description
Late Roman/Byzantine period, ca. 5th to 8th century CE. A pair of striking 18 karat gold earrings with a motif that most likely represents ivy leaves but to the modern eye appear to be heart-shaped bordered with filigree and with additional filigree at its center. Fine twisted bands of gold form the upper half of the loop; below each "heart" is a complex and still functional hinge that gives movement to the piece. Opposite the "heart" on each are small, round cages. Total weight: 2.83 g; size: 0.75" W x 1.05" H (1.9 cm x 2.7 cm)
Artisans during this time period sought to show their skill with fine goldwork, as these earrings demonstrate well - the level of small detail is amazing! Roman women - especially of the upper classes - had their ears pierced and wore one set of earrings. Jewelry was particularly important to women in Roman society because it was legally their own property, independent of their husband's wealth, and they could use it as they saw fit.
Provenance: Ex-private east coast, USA collection
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
