PAIR OF LARGE NINETEENTH-CENTURY CARVED WOOD AND POLYCHROME SPHINX

each in a recumbent position, raised on a square base

Dimensions: 80 cm. high; 120 cm. wide; 44 cm. deep (2)

Couchant on an integral rectangular base,the long, slender leonine body with a detailed rib cage, a garment covering the chest and curving over the shoulders and extended beneath a tail curled up over the back: an armlet on the upper arms to the fore and a nemes-headdress, the lappets behind the ears and in front of both shoulders.

The headdress was the striped head cloth worn by Pharaohs in ancient Egypt and was symbolic of their power.
