Description
John Fletcher. The Tragoedy of Rollo, Duke of Normandy. Acted by His Majesties Servants. Oxford: Leonard Lichfield, 1640. First (authorized) edition (second overall, only preceded by an unauthorized version with the title, The Bloody Brother, printed a year earlier). Small quarto. [ii], 73, [1, blank] pages. Bound to style in nineteenth-century half brown calf over plain boards, spine lettered in gilt. Binding quite worn at spine and corners, spine chipped at edges, hinges starting, previous owner's elaborate notes on (nineteenth-century) endleaves, a few occasional pencil notes in text, two small holes on page 59/60. Text toned and thumbsoiled or foxed. Still, a very good copy. This play was very popular in its day. This play includes material "borrowed" from other authors of the period, including Ben Jonson, and, perhaps more notably, William Shakespeare (two songs from Measure for Measure appear: Drink today, & drown all sorrow, and Take,O take those lips away).
