Description

John Edwards Holbrook. North American Herpetology; Or, a Description of the Reptiles Inhabiting the United States. Philadelphia: J. Dobson, 1836-1838. First editions of Volumes I and II (out of an eventual four volumes of the first edition). Two large quarto volumes. 120; [127], [1, blank] pages. Complete with twenty-three hand-colored lithographs in Volume I and twenty-eight hand-colored lithographs in Volume II. With tissue-guards. Errata slip tipped-into Volume II. Publisher's brown cloth. Both volumes rebacked with later spines, with later black and burgundy gilt morocco lettering labels. Boards of Volume I with some restoration to some corners, bindings rubbed and soiled. Text, and tissue-guards of both volumes dampstained and foxed, several plates are dampstained as well. Some tissue-guards are chipped or damaged. Contemporary and near contemporary previous ownership signatures on the front free endpaper of Volume I, and the first blank of Volume II. Generally a very good set with handsome plates. Sabin 32454.
