Edward Gibbon. The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. London: Printed for A. Strahan; and T. Cadell, 1788-1790. New Edition. Twelve volumes. Three folding maps. Contemporary mottled calf, gilt titles and red and black labels on spines. Marbled endpapers. Bindings and board edges moderately rubbed with a bit of wear at corners, boards repaired on joints, spines faintly sun-faded, corners slightly bumped. Text block edges lightly toned, some pages and plates mildly foxed, ink ownership signatures. Volume I has front joint starting, spine over-opened and creased. Volumes V and VIII have minute glue residue on fore-edges, adhering some pages together; small tear affecting text on pages 185/186 in Volume VIII. Still, a very nice and clean set.
