Description
[Mickey Spillane]. Typed Correspondence Between Spillane and Gene Roddenberry. Newburgh, NY and Temple City, CA: 1956-1957. Thirteen letters on fifteen pages, most measure 8.5 x 11 inches. Roddenberry's written on Writer's Guild of America stationery, nine letters signed by Roddenberry. Sheets lightly toned and foxed, a few letters creased and soiled possibly from rusted paper clip. Accompanied with prospectus for the series Spillane and Roddenberry were developing, "Murder by Spillane." A very good set of letters detailing the friendship and collaboration of two genre-focused writers.
Correspondence between the two men discuss a possible television show called "Murder by Spillane," which would be formatted along the lines of Alfred Hitchcock Presents. Roddenberry writes that he believes the show will "[go] off big," but also cites the possibility that the property could see refusals due to the synonymous relationship between Spillane's character Mike Hammer and "blood, sex and gore." In the midst of all this talk of business, Spillane and Roddenberry also refer to their own friendship, asking each other if they are able to meet, checking in on respective children, and Mickey says in one letter, "hello to the wife and behave yourself." Roddenberry would go on to write the TV series The Lieutenant and cultural phenomenon Star Trek. From the estate of Mickey Spillane.
