Description
John T. James. The Benders in Kansas. By John T. James, Attorney for the Defense in the trial of the "Bender Women" at Oswego, Labette County, in 1889-1890. The Complete Story. Facts, not Fiction. Wichita: The Kan-Okla Publishing Company, [1913]. First edition, wrapper issue. Octavo. [2, blank], [i-vii], 8-173, [3, blank] pages, eight full-page illustrations. Publisher's side-stitched binding, in original pictorial wrappers featuring illustration usually affixed to front board of cloth issue, as described in Six Guns. Wrappers lightly rubbed with some marginal bruising; closed tears at joints, the largest roughly 1.5 inches at lower-front, with some corresponding light creasing, two small holes to interior of backstrip, occasional scattered foxing. Staples rusted, terminal blank removed from staples but still attached. Still, a very good unsophisticated copy of a fragile item. Rare.
An uncommon title, particularly so in wrappers, chronicling the serial murders of a family running an inn in Southeastern Kansas, "related by their defense lawyer who must have known the facts." Six Guns and Saddle Leather, 1154.
