Item Details
Description
Edna St. Vincent Millay (1892-1950). Superb archive belonging to Anne Wills Gardner, Vassar roommate and life-long friend of Edna St. Vincent Millay. Archive includes personal autograph letters, inscribed books, a signed photograph, original poems written for Ms. Gardner by the Poet (including "Five Limericks in Love of Anne"), and a remarkable early selection of fair copies of poems believed to have been typed by Millay herself and presented with an inscription to Ms. Gardner dated 1916 [one year before the publication of her first book, Renascence].

New York and elsewhere: 1916-1956. Twenty-two octavo volumes of which thirteen are first editions and ten are signed and inscribed by Millay, ten autograph letters signed by Millay, four periodicals, six photographs, one scrapbook of newspaper articles and one cable telegram. Ten typed pages of poems by Millay, one with a partial holograph manuscript (Possession). All inscriptions and letters are written to Anne Gardner Lynch (also addressed as Anne McNeile or Mrs. Lyle McNeile), who is referenced to as a "college friend" in Letters of Edna St. Vincent Millay. A very good collection of items shared between Millay and Anne Gardner. Ms. Millay and Ms. Gardner met at Vassar [Millay was at Vassar from 1913 to 1917] and became instant friends, and roommates for at least part of their time at school, and remained close friends until the poet's death in 1950.

Millay's typed poems presented in a "Shipman's Common Sense Binder" stamped in gilt on the cover: "Selected Poems of Edna St. Vincent Millay" and include:
