Description
Suite of Six Queen Anne-Style Polychrome Sidechairs, ca. 1800, in the chinoiserie manner, each with a shell-carved crest above a baluster-form splat featuring differing Asian figures in exotic landscapes, the padded seats with period needlework depicting similar scenes, raised on cabriole legs joined by a shaped H-form stretcher and ending in pad feet; accompanied by the original receipt, h. 42". Provenance: Henry Stern Antiques, New Orleans, Louisiana; Estate of Carolyn G. Fay, Houston, Texas.
Condition
In very good restored condition, with older re-painting, and scratches, wear, shrinkage and scattered losses to the surfaces as indicated by the catalogue photos. All chairs are tight and functional. They exhibit evidence of past re-gluing and repair, including replaced front glue blocks beneath the slip seats. One chair exhibits evidence of insect damage to one side rail, with a repaired break over the tenons at the stile, now showing slight separation and slight movement if firmly pressed. There is a chip loss to the bottom of one rear foot, now painted in. The needlework upholstery exhibits losses/holes on five of the slip seat covers.
