Description
Monumental Continental Fruitwood Fauteuil a la Reine, 19th century, the tall padded and domed back joined by exuberantly carved arms in the form of a child resting on a branch of fruit, the branch being borne by an upright in the form of a figure, the padded seat raised on naturalistically carved legs simulating branches and ending in scrolled toes, h. 54-1/2".
Condition
In overall very good condition. The piece is tight and solid, including no play where the stretchers meet the legs. It exhibits normal rubbing, shrinkage, tiny losses or flakes to the edges of carved surfaces consistent with age and use. The finish is rubbed at the high points of the arms and scuffed at the front edges of the feet. The upholstery is in very good, approaching excellent condition. There is a missing finger to one of the children at the joint of the arm and stile. There is a loss about 1/8" high by 1/2" wide by 1/8" deep to the end of the sleeve on the underside of one of the standing figure's arms. There is a carving loss to the central carving on the bottom of the chairback; the loss is at the lamination where additional wood was glued on. On that same lower rail, at its joint with the stile it is missing its bottom bracket (visible in catalogue photo on left side facing the chair).
