Description
Made by J. & E. Stevens Company Cromwell, Ct. - Circa 1880’s This colorful depiction of an Irishman and his beloved porcine companion represents one of the most racially charged negative images in the entire field of mechanical bank collecting. First and foremost, there is the immediacy of the Irishman’s appearance. We find him maliciously lampooned as an odd looking creature with leprechaun physiognomy. Then, we discover his bad drinking habit. Please note the flask of whisky half emergent from his left coat pocket. We are meant to believe that he got intoxicated while tending to his pig. The pig must have gotten loose and we now witness the Irishman in the act of capturing and tethering him. The pig has been placed provocatively (almost sexually) between the man’s legs. Such “low-brow” humor, invoked against an immigrant population, is undoubtedly part of the derisive humor intended by the bank’s designers. Provenance: Dr. Z Material: Cast Iron
