Literature: Recorded and illustrated in the standard text on the original graphics of the artist by Georges Bloch: No. 1935; also Brigitte Baer: 1944 B.b.1.,
Comments: Note: The only impression we have ever seen with a hand signed pencil signature the existence of which is documented in Baer.
This is number 80 of the 156 series.
The scene depicted here shows the artist Edgar Degas in a brothel inspecting a naked woman. Degas is depicted very formally dressed in a long coat and cravat and appears rather nervous. This was a subject which Picasso depicted on many occasions with various degrees of eroticism. This work is a hommage to the “Maison Tellier†Monotype series made by Degas which had been published by Ambroise Vollard. We know that Picasso purchased nine Degas Monotypes in 1958 and he might have seen examples of these as early as 1906 when he began his relationship with Vollard. He was obviously a great admirer or Degas and found his exploits in the bordello’s of interest.,
Provenance: Henri M Petiet, Paris. The dealers stamp H.M.P in an oval, verso. Petiet was one of the preeminent art dealers of Paris in the post war era. ,
