Description
Africa, Liberia, Bassa, ca. early 20th century CE. A finely carved wood Gela mask created by the Bassa culture depicting an abstract human face of a concave form with narrow slit eyes, gracefully arched brows, a protruding, aquiline nose, protruding puckered lips, pointed cleft chin, petite ears, and plaited hair. The term Gela means "The Ancient One" suggesting that it was passed down for several generations. Wonderful deep patina! Size: 5" W x 7.75" H (12.7 cm x 19.7 cm)
