Description
KRISHNA RAJA WADIYAR IV: (1884-1940) Maharaja of Mysore 1894-1940. An interesting T.L.S., Krishnaraja Wadiyar, four pages, 8vo, Camp Kemmangundi, 16th December 1931, to Sir Stuart [Mitford Fraser], on his attractive colour printed stationery. The Maharaja thanks Sir Stuart for his letter of the 10th October and reflects on the Mysore Dasara, continuing 'Soon after the Dasara, several Sate problems, which caused considerable anxiety, had to be threshed out and solved… It was by no means a pleasant duty for me to order the cut in the salaries of my officers… Having a strenuous time, I felt the need of a short holiday'. The Maharaja continues in telling his correspondent of travelling in Balehonnur, Chickmagalur 'and other Malnad parts of the Kadur District… While camping there, I had the good luck to bag two tigers in a neighbouring jungle.' Concluding 'As regards the Round Table Conference, I need not say much. It remains to be seen whether the congress will make good use of the opportunity to spurn it. It cannot however be gainsaid that this unhappy country will have to pass through more troublous times on account of the irreconcilable attitude of the Congress.' A letter of great insight. VG
