CARDIGAN EARL OF: (1797-1868) British Lieutenant General, Commander of the Light Brigade. A.L.S., Earl of Cardigan, in the third person, two pages, 8vo, n.p., 11th May 1860, to a Gentleman. A brief correspondence stating 'The Earl of Cardigan presents his compliments to the Stewards of the Feast and of the Sons of the Clergy and regrets he cannot except the invitation to dinner for the 23rd.' With blank integral leaf. Together with, Earl of Lucan, (1800-1888), Anglo-Irish Aristocrat and British Army Officer. In part, responsible for the fateful order that led to the Earl of Cardigan leading the Charge of the Light Brigade. A.L.S., Lucan, two pages, 8vo, Hanover Square, 1st May 1859 to a Gentleman. Lucan informs his correspondent 'I beg to write a cheque (£7-8-8), balance owing to you on 40…' With blank integral leaf. Cardigan's letter has a portion of a label adhered to the top right corner, signs of a former mounting to verso, light stains and a cut piece of printed text adhered to the integral leaf.
