Description
ELGAR EDWARD: (1857-1934) English Composer. A.L.S., Edward Elgar, two pages, 4to, Hereford, 13th December 1908, to [Henry] Clayton. Elgar informs his correspondent that he has told Mr. Newman that he will be willing to conduct if he is free and enquires about a rehearsal in Brighton, further adding 'As this is only a short piece I suppose they wd. not pay the usual fee (£26.10/-) but I shd. want £15/15/-'. Elgar continues 'As to the symphony at Brighton I think it must not be performed under the circumstances - it would do more harm than good I fear if the concert is to be made up as A.H.L. (Alfred H. Littleton) thinks: so please squash it'. With a purple ink received stamp of Novello & Co to a clear area beneath Elgar's signature and dated 14th December 1908. About EX
