19th century AD. An amethyst-coloured desk seal with rounded edges, to the underside an incised border and reversed incuse legend in seriffed capitals 'Thank Rowland Hill For This'. 6.71 grams, 17mm (3/4"). Propert of a Hampshire collector; acquired London, UK, 1990s. Sir Rowland Hill (3 December 1795 – 27 August 1879) introduced the uniform public postal system with the 'Penny Black' postage stamp whereby payment for delivery was made in advance. [No Reserve]
