Document signed ("Geo: Jeffreys") and countersigned by Joseph Lane, adjudicating in favour of Thomas Cartwright the inheritance of St Margaret's Hill (Southwark) and several houses from his uncle Samuel Cartwright, Citizen and Stationer of London, folding and light surface creases which affects the 'J' of 'Joseph', age toning, spotting and minor tears to the upper and lower right portion of the piece, folio, 27 June 1670, mounted, framed and glazed, overall size 36 x 45cm The 1st Baron Jeffreys (better known as "Hanging Judge Jeffreys") became notorious during the reign of King James II, rising to the position of Lord Chancellor. Jeffreys was knighted in 1677 and by 1680 had become chief justice of Chester
