Description
Full groove groundstone axe head and groundstone pestle. The axe head has a ground hafting groove around the full width of the stone and measures 5-3/4 inches long by 3-3/4 inches at the widest by 1-5/8 inches thick. The material is a fine-grained meta conglomerate or possibly granite with quartz, hornblende, and feldspar inclusions. The pestle is a utilized natural cobble with elongated shape measuring 6-3/4 inches long by 2 inches wide by 1-1/2 inches thick. The cobble shows a distinct groundstone pattern on the rounded tip and and two sides. The material type is a medium-grained metamorphic, possibly meta-quartzite. Similar axes and pestles are known from the Archaic periods through to European contact across the North American Continent. Both show slight post-depositional alteration to the surface coloration. The axe has battering or abrasion marks on one end of the hafting groove. The pestle has fairly random and limited linear striations (scratches) on three faces.
