Description
2nd Half of the17th Century. A dedicated ‘title page’ to Sir Richard Gilpin, showing a north-east view of Scaleby Castle. In well-carved gilt wood and composition frame, surmounted by a Royal Coat of Arms. Measuring 8 ¾” by 14”. (Cond: the frame with some losses to edges, damage to Coat of Arms, the engraving discolored, soiled) (100/150) Cf. Richard Gilpin, (1625–1700), an English nonconformist minister and physician prominent in Northern England during Restoration of the Monarchy. In 1659 he purchased the medieval fortress, Scaleby Castle, in Cumberland.
