AN ANTIQUE FRENCH GILT BRONZE AND PORCELAIN MOUNTED CARRIAGE CLOCK-ON-STAND, BY DROCOURT, NUMBERED 11237, PARIS, RETAILED BY HENRY CAPT, GENEVA, CIRCA 1880, the rectangular gilt bronze case frame engraved with floral and triangular decoration throughout, centering a beveled glass front before a hand painted porcelain panel with circular dial of Roman chapters and blued steel hour hands above a small circular minute dial with Arabic minute numbers flanked by Psyche and Cupid, beneath "HENRY CAPT GENEVE," reversing to a beveled glass hinged door opening to a striking and repeating mechanism with alarm, impressed oval Drocourt stamp, engraved "Henry Capt Geneve" beneath alarm levels, within hand painted porcelain plaque sides depicting classical maiden muses, raised on a similarly engraved conforming base and split tailed nereid cast feet. Height: 5 3/8" Width: 3 7/8" Depth: 3 1/4" NOTE: A virtually identical carriage clock, but lacking a stand, was sold Christie's South Kensington, London 5 July 2011, lot 414, for USD $7,600._x000B_Pierre Drocourt (French 1819 - circa 1890), established a reputation as producing some of the most exquisite carriage clocks of the second half of the 19th century. He was located in Paris at Rue de Limoges, which in 1866 was renamed Rue Debeileyon, but also had a factory in the town of Saint-Nicolas-d'Ailermont. His firm's exceptional work in the carriage clock trade received awards at various exhibitions, including a silver medal at the 1878 Paris Exhibition, followed by the much coveted gold medal in 1889. He retired in 1871 and was succeeded by his son Alfred.
Condition
