Shumard was the Texas State Geologist. On page 12 Shumard notes "Among the combustible minerals, may also be mentioned the occurrence of Petroleum, which has been observed at several points in the state. The most important locality visited is at Sour Lake in Hardin County, where this substance may be collected in considerable quantity from the surfaces of the remarkable acid springs adjacent to the lake." Rare, no copies appear in recent auction records and none could be located currently in the trade.
