xvi, [17]-416 pp. Large folding frontispiece copper-engraved map showing the Oregon Territory in 1838; copper-engraved plate showing the basaltic formations on the Columbia River. (8vo) original blind-stamped brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Fourth Edition.

This fourth edition has the same map as the 1838 first edition, which was the "earliest map of the Oregon interior with a pretense of accuracy." Wheat states that the map "represented a real advance, and it was made from personal observations." "Parker accompanied a fur-trading party, in 1835, from Council Bluffs to Walla Walla" - Graff 3194; Field 1175; Howes P89; Rader 2600n; Sabin 58729; Smith 7896; (Tweney 60); Wagner-Camp 70:4; Wheat Transmississippi Map 438.

Condition

Spine sunned, some wear, previous owner's name on endpaper and title page; map foxed and with short stub tear with tape repair on the reverse; foxing within; very good.
